Call for papers

Papers

We encourage presentations in a range of formats: papers (single or joint author), symposia and workshops. Information is separately available on the web pages for Poster presentations, for exhibition work and performances. Please use the following format:

  • Name(s) of presenter(s)
  • Institution(s), with country
  • Title of abstract
  • Format (paper, symposium presentation, workshop)
  • Preferred stream (if any)
  • Brief description (150-250 words)

We cannot guarantee which stream each presentation will be in, but it is helpful if you indicate the stream you prefer. Abstracts should be submitted as Word attachments via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Abstracts from DPR9 can be viewed by clicking here.

Presentations are allocated 35 minutes; presenters are encouraged to leave generous time (10 minutes or more) for discussion. Please let us know if you would like a double session (particularly if your proposal is for a workshop).

If you would like to discuss a presentation please contact Jerome Satterthwaite either by email ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) or on +44 (0)1752 823091.

There has been a strong response to the first call for papers. The conference programme is now being rescheduled and we are able to accept more abstracts. The second call for papers is Friday 18 February. Please note: This is NOT a deadline; but it will be helpful to the conference team to receive abstracts by then or as soon as possible after that date.

Posters

Posters are a simple and direct way of engaging the interest of viewers/readers in an issue. We are increasingly encouraging presenters to use this powerful visual medium. Posters will be displayed for the duration of the conference so that delegates can view them at any time; and there will be a poster session in the programme when delegates can discuss the posters with presenters. Abstracts for posters are submitted in the same format as for papers, workshops or contributions to symposia:

  • Name(s) of presenter(s)
  • Institution(s), with country
  • Title of abstract
  • Format (please make clear that your proposal is for a poster)
  • Brief description (150-250 words)

Abstracts should be submitted as Word attachments via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Abstracts from DPR9 can be viewed by clicking here. For guidelines on poster presentations please see below.

Guidelines for preparing posters

(these suggestions make use of the  advice given on the AERA web pages)

Your material should be mounted on paper or thin card so that it can be fixed to the display boards with drawing pins (thumb tacks). It will be helpful if you bring some drawing pins with you. Velcro will also work if you prefer to use it. Please do not use heavy board which may be hard to fix in position. The standard poster size is A2, which is 420mm x 594mm (16.5 inches x 23.4 inches).  If your poster needs to be larger than this or if you need two or more posters, please consult us by contacting This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If you are willing for people viewing your poster to make contact with you, please put your name and contact details together with the poster title at the top of the poster or on a separate small sheet to fix immediately above it. In designing your poster it is useful to bear in mind that people may study it when you are not there, so the more self-explanatory it is, the better.  At the same time, it is helpful to keep wording, figures and tables as simple as possible, so that viewers can readily take away the main message. If you use illustrations, a brief large type heading of no more than one or two lines should be provided above each illustration, with more detailed information added in smaller type beneath the illustration if necessary.

We hope that during the poster session you will be on hand to discuss the poster with delegates. You may like to have copies of the poster (perhaps in black and white and in A4 size), and perhaps also copies of the abstract, available so that delegates can take a copy away. If you do want to have copies available, please bring them with you to the conference. It will be very difficult to make copies during the conference itself.

It is helpful to assume that your poster will be viewed from a distance of about 1metre (3 feet), so lettering should be about 2cm (2/3") high, and larger than this for more important information, preferably in bold font. In general it is best to set out text in columns rather than rows.

If you would like to discuss the content or layout of your poster, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Exhibition Work

Exhibition work is a simple and direct way of engaging the interest of viewers in an issue. We are increasingly encouraging presenters to use this powerful visual medium. Exhibition works will be displayed for the duration of the conference so that delegates can view them at any time; and there will be a session in the programme when delegates can discuss the works with exhibitors. Abstracts for exhibition work are submitted in the same format as for papers, workshops or contributions to symposia:

  • Name(s) of presenter(s)
  • Institution(s), with country
  • Title of abstract
  • Format (please make clear that your proposal is for a piece of work to be exhibited)
  • Brief description (150-250 words)

Abstracts should be submitted as Word attachments via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Abstracts from DPR9 can be viewed by clicking here.

Works intended for exhibition will vary in size and in the requirements for their proper display.

We recommend that you discuss the details of the work you would like to exhibit by contacting Simon Webster by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

The second call for exhibition work is Friday 18 February. Please note: This is NOT a deadline; but it will be helpful to the conference team to receive abstracts by then or as soon as possible after that date.

Performances

Performance is a simple and direct way of engaging the interest of viewers and participants in an issue. We are encouraging presenters to use the powerful media of dance, music, drama and other performing arts. Performances will be integrated into the conference programme so that delegates can view them and perhaps take part; and there will be an opportunity in the programme when delegates can discuss the performance works with performers. Abstracts for performance work are submitted in the same format as for papers, workshops or contributions to symposia:

  • Name(s) of presenter(s)
  • Institution(s), with country
  • Title of abstract
  • Format (please make clear that your proposal is for a performance piece)
  • Brief description (150-250 words)

Abstracts should be submitted as Word attachments via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Performance  will vary in terms of space and time required. We recommend that you discuss the details of the work you would like to perform by contacting Simon Webster by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The second call for performances is Friday 18 February. Please note: This is NOT a deadline; but it will be helpful to the conference team to receive abstracts by then or as soon as possible after that date.
